The Best Design Feeds http://design-feeds.info/ Sat, 22 Nov 2008 02:06:21 +0100 lilina (FeedCreator 1.7.2) Willets Point tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6531343.post-288832741482578284 approved a $3 billion project to transform Willets Point from what is seen as a third-world cesspool to a mixed-use development with "exciting retail and entertainment offerings, a hotel and convention center, thousands of mixed-income residential units and new public open spaces and other community amenities" on the 60-acre site.

Eminent domain is the tool of choice for the transformation of the area near the new Mets Stadium that is home to auto shops, junkyards and other "undesirable" businesses. Pollution is rampant from the industrial uses in the area, as well as the lack of infrastructure like sewers. I've never been to Willets Point myself, but photos of it remind me of Lago Agrio, the frontier Ecuadorian oil town I studied a year ago. My attitude to the Queens area is similar: as undesirable as the place may be to most, that doesn't mean it should be bulldozed to a tabula rasa; the best of the life that exists should somehow be incorporated into the long-term plan.

The renderings give the impression that a whole new neighborhood will spring up over time. Let's hope it has the apparent vibrancy of the current incarnation.]]>

Turkey Alternatives http://www.curbly.com/DIY-Maven/posts/5671-Turkey-Alternatives turkey.jpg

If a recent news conference by a certain future ex-Alaska governor has you horrified--especially with Thanksgiving next week--I thought some turkey alternatives might be in order. Follow the jumps for recipes of these ideas:

Standing Rib Roast
Ham
Crown Roast of Pork
Boneless Beef Rump Roast
Roasted Duck
Italian Roll
Steaks, including rib-eye, t-bone, porterhouse and filet mignon.

If the video has put you completely over the edge and you’ve finally decided to go vegan or vegetarian your first stop might be vegcooking.com, who suggest the following faux turkeys:

Tofukey Roast
Celebration Roast
Veggie Turkey Breast with Wild-Rice and Cranberry Stuffing

They also have a great collection of vegetarian holiday recipes, including all the trimmings!

The Wireless Router Vase http://www.curbly.com/DIY-Maven/posts/5670-The-Wireless-Router-Vase new-router-by-stc.jpg

Finally, an answer to that age-old question, ‘Could they make wireless routers less ugly?’ STC’s response is a  wireless router vase combo. I’m not sure about the safety issue of water so close to all those connectors--especially the AC one--but hey, it’s still an inspired design, and you could always go the faux floral route in your router.

Also incorporated into the vase are wireless internet, voice over IP, land line telephone and wired DSL. Via.

Perspectives http://designyoutrust.com/?p=7850 Concept

While interviews traditionally present what people say, in Perspectives the interviewees don’t actually say anything. With the spoken portion of the footage edited out, Perspectives leaves only body language, pauses for thought, and interjections to do the communicating.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Typically people think of “content” only as what’s literally being said. The content of “Perspectives” is based on the idea that what’s not being said says something of its own. More here.

How To Make Perfect Mashed Potatoes. http://www.curbly.com/Chrisjob/posts/5673-How-To-Make-Perfect-Mashed-Potatoes- mashed-potatoes.jpgI gotta admit: I appreciate the smells of sage-infused dressings and carmelized sweet potatoes and spiced cranberries, but every year at Thanksgiving, it's the mashed potatoes which occupy at least half of my very-stretch stomach.

So whether they'll fill up the vegetarians in your family, or you just need a place to use up all that gravy, perfect mashed potatoes are easy and obtainable for any home cook.

  • Proper Preparation
  • Flavor Twists
  • Keeping them warm
  • Leftover potato ideas

Faux Fire http://www.curbly.com/lilybee/posts/5666-Faux-Fire When the weather turns rubbish nothing beats snuggling up in front of a fire, possibly with trashy fiction and preferably with some kind of chocolaty beverage. It's just what winter should be all about. Unfortunately our apartment doesn't have a fireplace so I was forced to improvise...

created on: 11/20/08

While technically it wont keep me warm, (except in a cockles-of-my-heart way) it was super easy to make and it makes me smile, and my baby scream with bizarre-o baby glee.

To make your own you'll need

  • A sheet of foam core board (maybe left over from making your bow-tying board)
  • A set (or two) of LED Christmas lights
  • A very sharp pencil or pen or other pokey object

You can either mark out where you want your lights to go or wing it.

To make the holes you poke through the foam board with a pencil from the front. You don't want the hole to be huge, you'll be making them bigger when you poke the lights through from the back.

Then you poke the lights through from the back! They should fit nice and snugly, expanding the smaller pencils holes.

And voila, done. Now all you need is some improbable spy fiction and a vat of white hot chocolate (and a few hours peace and quiet... sigh).

Here's what it looks like unlit:

And lit again, but blurry.

Dexter's Blood Splattered Dining Room http://www.curbly.com/DIY-Maven/posts/5669-Dexter-s-Blood-Splattered-Dining-Room- dexter-lander.jpg

Eleven designers were inspired by six different original Showtime series to transform a townhouse in Gramercy Park into Showtime’s Design House. Lucky Amy Lau drew the Dexter card and came up with this blood splattered dining room. If you know anything about Dexter, the television show or the book series, the blood makes perfect sense.

29522_4_468.jpg

Dexter is an expert at blood splatter analysis who just happens to be a serial killer. But he’s a good serial killer because he only kills really bad people. Like other serial killers. But I digress.

01dexterdining.jpg

Dexter’s white dining room is punctuated by fake blood-splattered walls, bloody art, vertebrae-shaped candlesticks with blood red candles, blood-filled stemmed glasses, plates with bloody fingerprints and various other macabre elements, including some bloody embroidery. If any of Ms. Lau design choices appeal to you, they’re now for sale. Via.

City Flats Hotel in Holland, Michigan http://www.curbly.com/readjulia/posts/5665-City-Flats-Hotel-in-Holland-Michigan 111508 City Flats (1)

My husband whisked me away for my birthday weekend to an incrediby cool Euro-style hotel in an unlikely location: Holland, Michigan. We're from Ann Arbor, so it was just a couple hours drive, well worth it for the two-person soaking tub in our suite.

111608 City Flats (6)

The hotel's apparently a protoype by the company Hathaway, which designs office furniture. It has a real modern, Euro feel, including this giant wall of neon lighted windows which change color. The furniture was nice to look at, but little was comfortable.

111608 City Flats (5)

Love this light fixture in the lounge area. Swirls of metal in a glowing orb.

111608 City Flats (3)

The bar area.

111608 City Flats (2)

Love the brown and green botanical themes in the hallways. Think it would make stunning fabric.

Christmas by Colour http://designyoutrust.com/?p=7878
A not-for-profit exploration into the colours that shape our Christmas. Frustrated at the plethora of Christmas reds, whites and greens those pesky designers at Raw Design Studio are exploring what colours people really associate with their Christmas.

Help us to identify the real Christmas colour spectrum by suggesting your own colour and its personal meaning. Abstract, funny or literal - the choice is yours. We’ll be collating and uploading the best ideas as we go along with the aim of producing a Christmas by Colour poster as well as individual v-cards.
